Legson Kayira was just 16-years old when he set out on his epic journey from a small rural Malawian village to the United States of America in his quest to realise his seemingly impossible dream.
Walking barefoot, and carrying food for five days, an axe and two books, he travelled more than 2,500 miles through the African bush. Most people would have given up, but not Legson.
Inspired by the life of Abraham Lincoln and the motto of his secondary school, he walked across four African countries before reaching Khartoum in the Sudan, where American consular officials helped him to travel to the United States to take up a scholarship at Skagit Valley College in Washington State.
I Will Try records his early life and the details of this epic journey. Originally published in 1965, while Legson was studying at the University of Washington, it became a best-seller in the United States (16 weeks on the New York best-seller list), and was translated into numerous other languages.
Legson later went on to study history at Cambridge University in England and wrote four novels.
This volume contains the original text as well as a memoir by Legson’s widow, Julie Kayira, written after his sudden death in England in October 2012. The foreword is written by South African media expert Phil Molefe.

Anyone who reads this amazing autobiography of a young impoverished man from the African country of Malawi who had a dream of going to America and getting a college education will be awestruck by his courage and determination. I have worked in Malawi and know how authentic his story and descriptions are--I am humbled to know he lives and has his being on the same planet as me.

Helpful Resource for Teaching/Learning Writing Structure and Style

This is a helpful writing resource for younger kids. It's targeted for kids in 3rd-5th grade. Grammar can be a hard subject. It can be kind of boring on it's own. This writing curriculum teaches grammar and has the students apply it in a fun way. This study goes beyond grammar and writing. It helps students to outline and pick out key concepts of articles. Students get to learn about writing to include: setting, plot, climax, and resolution within a theme. This writing course doesn't just teach about adjectives and adverbs but helps the student write with quality adjectives and strong verbs to help them make their writing more interesting for the reader. All of the articles provided are interesting and fun and you learn something new about the subject besides learning structure and writing style too. The teacher that designed this study specializes in history-based writing. She homeschooled her own kids for more than 20 years. She has lots of experience. "Institute for Excellence in Writing" publishes a lot of other helpful writing resources too and for all ages. We know several families that have used this publisher exclusively for teaching writing structure and style and they've been happy with it for many years themselves as well.
