About the Author
Gilbert H. Muller, who received a Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Stanford University, is currently professor of English and Special Assistant to the President at the LaGuardia campus of the City University of New York. He has also taught at Stanford University, Vassar College, and several universities overseas. Dr. Muller is the author of the award-winning Nightmares and Visions: Flannery O’Connor and the Catholic Grotesque, Chester Himes , and other critical studies. His essays and reviews have appeared in The New York Times, The New Republic, The Nation, The Sewanee Review, The Georgia Review, and elsewhere. He is also a noted author and editor of textbooks in English and composition, including The Short Prose Reader with Harvey Wiener, and with John A Williams, The McGraw-Hill Introduction to Literature, Bridges: Literature across Cultures, and Ways In: Reading and Writing about Literature. Among Dr. Muller’s awards are National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a Mellon Fellowship.

Harvey S. Wiener is currently affiliated with Marymount Manhattan College after serving as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Adelphi University. Previously University Dean for Academic Affairs, the City University of New York, he was founding president of the Council of Writing Program Administrators. Dr. Wiener is the author of many books on reading and writing for college students and their teachers, including The Writing Room (Oxford, 1981). He is co-author of The McGraw-Hill College Handbook, a reference grammar and rhetoric text. Dr. Wiener has chaired the Teaching of Writing Division of the Modern Language Association (1987). He has taught writing at every level of education from elementary school to graduate school. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brooklyn College, he holds a Ph.D. in Renaissance literature. Dr. Wiener has won grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, and the Exxon Education Foundation.

Renting vs. Buying

I tried renting for the first time. I don't know if it is the best way to go. I feel as though I need to put the book in some sort of protective case. Also, the professor wants us to write in the book for reference. So, I guess it all depends on the class and how good you are at taking care of your book.

Great Stories in here

The book was a requirement for one of my classes, but after reading several of the short essays, I began to enjoy the book. I would recommend it to anyone, even a teenager who needs ideas for writing papers. The essays are short and easy to read, yet make for amazing dialogue.

It had very little high light and also pen marks with bended pages.
It was most definitely a deal though i bought it for a really cheap price
i can still read over the text no pages missing.
will consider buying other books.

Useful book for beginners, clear and enthusiastic

Twydle's short book provides enough detail for a beginner. It is not a definitive book but gives the highlights of important pen manufacturers, explains the basic mechanics of fountain pens, some of their history and some interesting photos. One picture is even a bit racy, showing that even pens can be made exciting. I would have liked to see a bit more about the instruments surrounding antique pens, such as ink wells, blotters, etc. This book is worth the money if you are just starting out.

I'm relatively new to fountain pens and this book really brought me up to speed with all of its information! If you love to use a fountain pen, then I would highly recommend getting this book! It covers just about all of the brands and gives you a quick history of that brand. Has beautiful pictures of fountain pens from yesterday and today! You will be surprised at what this man's father had to say about Montblanc!

Like a gentle rain

Like a gentle rain, the lyrical poems from Le Pham Le's "From Where the Wind Blows" quiets the mind and draws the reader into the privacy of her rememberings. As I read, my heart opened. I cried, feeling her words that evoke so much emotion. This book is for anyone who has ever wondered about the experiences of a Vietnamese refugee. More than that, for anyone whose own personal life journey may have left them feeling like a refugee, this collection of poems gives a glimpse. The precision of her words carries powerful meanings that open the door to an inner world of pain, turmoil, beauty and triumph.
"Simplicity," so aptly named, is one of my favorites because her language is so pure. Potent. This poem ends with . . . "Wind, carry my worries to the other side of the sea!" Whether by wind or by words, her poems transport the reader into a different realm, and I was uplifted by the flight.
I look forward to more writings from Le Pham Le.

Magnificent and Thoroughly Captivating

There are few sources of poetry today that can capture the essense of the Vietnamese-American experience with such vivid imagery and a slew of emotions. Le's poetry emits a profound sense of sorrow as she embarks on a literary journey back to her past, and the reader cannot help but feel as if they are traveling alongside her. It has been decades since the end of the Vietnam War, yet each one of Le's poems manages to bring the struggles of that time period to life. Without a doubt, Le's poetry is eloquent, poignant, deeply touching, extremely captivating, timeless, and speaks to all generations.

Must read book of poetry!

I had the pleasure of meeting Le Pham Le and hearing her read from her new book of poems. She is a terrific writer who beautifully recounts her experiences traveling by boat with her husband and baby to the United States from Vietnam and her experiences in a refugee camp. Her poems will bring you to tears. Having recently lost my own mother, I was very touched by "When the Last Leaf Falls." a poem she wrote in memory of her beloved father. Anyone who appreciates poetry, will find comfort and pleasure in Le Pham Le's new book of poems.
