Fascia forms a continuous tensional network throughout the human body, covering and connecting every single organ, every muscle, and even every nerve or tiny muscle fiber. After several decades of severe neglect, this ubiquitous tissue has transformed from the “Cinderella of orthopaedic science” into an almost super star position within medical research. Starting with the first few years of this 21st century, the number of research papers on fascia in peer-reviewed journals experienced an almost exponential increase. The 1st International Fascia Research Congress, held at the Harvard Medical School in October 2007, was celebrated with worldwide acknowledgement. Similar to the rapidly growing field of glia research in neurology, there is now a global recognition that this underestimated contextual tissue plays a much more important role in health and pathology than was estimated during previous decades.

As every medical student knows and every doctor still remembers, up to now, fascia has been introduced in anatomy dissection courses as the white packing stuff that one first needs to clean off, in order “to see something”. Similarly, anatomy books have been competing with each other, in how clean and orderly they present the locomotor system, by cutting away the whitish or semi-translucent fascia as completely and skilfully as possible. While students appreciate these appealing graphic simplifications, with shiny red muscles, each attaching to specific skeletal points, frustration is certain when these simplified maps have almost nothing to do with how the real body feels and behaves, be it in medical surgery or during therapeutic palpation.

The simple questions discussed in musculoskeletal textbooks “which muscles” are participating in a particular movement thus become almost obsolete.

Muscles are not functional units, no matter how common this misconception may be. Rather, most muscular movements are generated by many individual motor units, which are distributed over some portions of one muscle, plus other portions of other muscles. The tensional forces of these motor units are then transmitted to a complex network of fascial sheets, bags, and strings that convert them into the final body movement. Into how many ‘muscles’ each of them has been divided by our historical textbook authorities, depended more or less on their manual skills with the dissection knife. Their distinctions have little to do with the question about which movements these structures can perform.

While not everybody will be happy with this new terminology, it offers many important advantages for the field. Rather than having to draw most often arbitrary demarcation lines between joint capsules and their intimately involved ligaments and tendons (as well as interconnected aponeuroses, retinacula and intramuscular fasciae), fascial tissues are seen as one interconnected tensional network that adapts its fiber arrangement and density according to local tensional demands. This terminology fits nicely to the Latin root of the term ‘fascia’ (bundle, bandage, strap, unification, binding together) and is synonymous with the non-professional’s understanding of the term “connective tissue” (in contrast to medical and biological scientists, which include cartilage, bone and even blood as connective tissue).

Brings the fascial system and its treatment to a new level

For the first time all of the so called "pressure points", many acupunture points, trigger points, and tender points throughout the body are explained in relation to the function of the fascial system. Luigi Stecco, PT, has treated these fascial points for years and now with the help of his daughter Carla Stecco M.D. who is a premier fascial researcher, corroborates the points with cadaver studies of the fascia. We no longer have to manually treat a point just because it is tender. We can now correlate the point with functional testing of what they call myofascial units. After treatment of each of these fascial restrictive points within the unit a practitioner can retest the movement to see if the painful loss of movement has improved.

wonderful book

I've been treating patients for 18 years and believe this to be one of the best instructional manuals that I have come across. I have paid thousands to learn ART, Graston and CCEP. Those courses are great but for the cost of this manual and course it is most cost effective. In my opinion CCEP and Fascial manipulation course provide the best instruction for a sequence of possible probable areas to treat.

Practical Manipulation is a must

This book is a must for anyone who is working with soft tissues.

The pictures inside are very different from other anatomy texts, because they actually include the fascia! Very insightful as to the significant role fascia plays in movement and movement coordination, with some research to back it up.

I hope to take this course in Italy!

New translation a gift

Stanislavski's "My Life in Art" was written in haste during the Moscow Art Theatre's 1922-24 European and American tours and translated into a language he neither spoke nor understood by a mysterious individual (J.J. Robbins) with less than satisfactory credentials for the job. For nearly a century this has been the version available in English and for the most part anywhere in the world outside of Russia. But upon returning to Moscow Stanislavski continued to write and revise the book which was later published in Russia and considered by Stanislavski to be both definitive and the version he was satisfied with.

Thus, Jean Bendetti's new translation of the Russian version is a welcome and valuable gift, not only to actors and the theatre but to art and artistic endeavor in general. Much is the same as the original Engligh version in terms of content, but much is also new and different, never before available in English. Of particular interest are the appendices recounting Stanislavski's more personal memories of Chekhov and the later European and American tours.

An important aspect lost in the previous translation was Stanislavski's personal, conversational tone, which is how the book itself was written; i.e. Stanislavski spoke and what he said was scribed. Thus, a whole new feeling comes of this translation that is extremely valuable, if not priceless. It is nearly impossible not to feel that you know Stanislavski very personally after reading the book. Particularly in the last section (the appendix of the European-American tour) you feel as if he has spoken to you personally about the entire experience. As such the voice and personality of this great master speaks and can be discovered once more in a way that has previously not been possible. This alone is more than worth the price of the book.

Indeed this will be a valuable and cherished volume for years to come, if not an entirely new rejuvenation of what was in its time a classic, historically influential and historically significant work.

It is a fascinating portrait of the history of modern acting and also of Russian history. Absolutely key for understanding the Method, and the development of today's theater.

Illustrated Guide to the Bible

This is one magnificent work. It covers the major themes of the Bible with detailed analysis and relevant sidebars so that anyone in a Bible study group or reading the Bible on their own can have a meaningful source of interpreatations. Each page is a new subject, which makes it simple to use. Pages can be read on their own or the entire book can be read. Bible verses are quoted on each topic so the reader is always aware of how the idea is being applied.
This work is less than 300 pages, but it is so rich in detail that one will not be able to skim through it in a couple of evenings. Once you start reading, it is hard to put down and is hard to not read every word on every page. This book helps one gain perspective and context. At the end is a summary of each book, including the apochrypha. In the main text, non-canonical books like the Gospel of Thomas are mentioned, so the reader can rest assured the author put as much scope and thought into this work as was practical.
Bible scholars, Bible study groups, general knowledge seekers, historians, philosphers, and many others will find this book extremely useful and user-friendly. Anyone disappointed in this wonderful volume is just not interested in learning.

Best illustrated guide around

I can't recommend this book enough. As someone who has read a lot of other guides to the Bible, this one outdoes them all simply due to its comprehensiveness, easy to follow writing, unique information, and beautifully relevant images on every page. Furthermore, the info it provides is backed up by scholarly sources, making it a book without a Christian biased (something not many books on the Bible can say). In short, this book covers everything in a brilliant format making it the best guide you can buy. I still can't seem to put it down.
