What a Journey? The Gathering takes You away, and You never want to return!

If You have already read the first two in the prophecy series, then you have been waiting for this story to be told and finished. Have you every wondered what would have been if The First People or Natives to the North and South America Continents, had been prepared when the Spainards or the Europeans landed on the beaches in their boats? If the invaders had not committed the biggest genocide of the Natives, what our world would have been today?
Dinah McCall aka as Sharon Sala takes Us on a journey in 3 books that would have shown how things could have been if The First People were ready in the Gathering and the whole Prophecy series.
In this book Typhen and Yuma are trying to lead their people back across from the state of Oklahoma to the Mountains and Ocean on the Atlantic Eastern seashore! Typhen is the daughter of a Windwalker who we meet in the first book in this series! All the Natives have gathered to meet the one who will save their world! Every tribe is at this Gathering, and working together to learn and be taught how to work beside the new ones that came from the Firewalksrs burnt lands! I don't want to give too much away, however Dinah aka Sharon has weaved a story full of twist and turns that keep you so engrossed in the story, that when it ends, you are sad to be back in reality. There is a surprise twist at the end, I won't spoil it! You will cry, shout, And every other emotion will come out and the journey is so worth it! Every woman, though strong and independent should have a man and lover as Yuma is to Typhen!

Through great tragedy comes great triumph

The Gathering is the third book in The Prophecy series, and in this part of the story, Tyhen seeks to fulfill her destiny to unite the New Ones--those that came through a magical portal from the future with The People who lived in ancient times, before the invaders slaughtered thousands and took over the lands. She is The Dove, who is protected by The Eagle, known to many as Yuma, who came through the portal with Layla Birdsong/Singing Bird and swore to protect the Windwalker's daughter while she was still in her mother's womb. Though The Dove is barely an adult, she leads her people with fierce determination, always seeking others' comfort and safety before her own. The trail is fraught with many hazards and tears, and her people must reach The Gathering before the winter storms overtake them.

A running theme throughout each of the books is the hero's love for his heroine, and each man's declaration to each woman, "You will love me, and I will guard you with my life." At the heart of it all, the driving force is love--a couple's love for each other, the love of a parent for a child, the love of the leaders for their people. Love can take us through the darkest hours, the greatest hardship, the most profound loss. Love makes us do for others, even if we would have given up on doing for ourselves. Thus series is the ultimate time travel romance.

The author tells the story as it is given to her in a dream, and that's part of what makes her writing as Dinah McCall so unique. She allows the story flow as it is given to her, as it is given by The Old Ones. I was so pleased to reach the end of the gathering and discover that this was not the last story of The Prophecy Series, and I look forward to the next installment.

Another winner for Dinah McCall/ Sharon Sala

The wait for this book was absolutely worth it. The author has a voice that resonates across the pages that makes putting it down unfinished virtually impossible, l was reading until 3:45am. The journey she takes her characters and her readers on is epic. I highly recommend this book to anyone and if you have not yet read the two previous books, you should.

Intriguing!

This book had elements that were good, but again, it felt just like a setup to something bigger. In this case, it’s obvious. (It’s in the title of the next book. No spoilers here.) All the same, I liked it. (But really. All four of these books have felt like setups for some big plot. There are parts that definitely hint at it, and this book has the biggest reveal yet, but no real action so far.)

In any case, the journey to Vampire Mountain is dangerous, but a few notable things happen. Darren makes friends with wolves. I loved this especially because Darren really cares about the wolves and animals in general. You can tell. He’s reluctant to leave them. He even goes after a bear to protect a wolf cub. It’s crazy. Bears are dangerous, man. But I liked what they added to the story.

One of my favorite parts was with one of the Little People sent to escort them by Mr. Tiny. We learn a whole lot more about them. Again, no spoilers, but I love it. They’re fascinating.

Vampire Mountain is pretty cool in its own way. Vampires are a bit stuffy and prefer to be primitive and stick to tradition, but they still have a pretty cool way of life. Wouldn’t fancy it myself, but it’s fun to read about. We also meet a lot of new people.

Then of course there’s the big reveal that makes it pretty clear what the main plot is going to be of the next several books (if not all of them). We don’t get many answers or much information, but it’s intriguing enough. And then Darren has his own quest to fulfill first. I look forward to reading about that next.

Good read but frustrating ending…

So great story, the plot is building, it’s really starting to get good and then, TO BE CONTINUED…

Really? The book is only 212 pages long! I get that the author is writing these for a young audience but we can sit and read a book that’s longer than 200 pages. The Harry Potter series should have proven that. If you’re going to publish a book then make it a complete story for crying out loud. Right now I just feel cheated. If the rest of the series ends up being the same, not sure I’m willing to invest my time in it.

The Mythology Comes Out

The four entry in the Darren Shan series proves to be the most interesting yet the least-action packed of any of the previous novels. Upon reading the first four books in the series it is easy to see why Universal Pictures* has decided to adapt the 12 books into 4 separate movies (each movie chronologically focuses on a book trilogy). The books are interesting, easy to read, and not too childish (as one might perceive from the large font and short page count) - but at the same time they do take a lot of time for things to really start going. It wasn't until the fourth book that any of the mythology has started to come into the play.

The first three novels can easily be summarized as Darren Shan's introduction into the world of Vampire's and later a particular ensemble of creaturesFun. They can easily been seen as a collective story (as they deal with Darren's destruction of his human-life to his naïve acceptance of his vampire life) but they also each have their own distinct manner.

The fourth book is a bit of a departure for that. It seems that the author, now confident with his series and armed with an established world, has finally set out to tell the story he has been itching to get to. The book takes place approximately 8 years after the events of the third book and equally works as a sequel, while keeping a distinct distance from the series epilogue. In this novel the author has confidence in his story and his characters enough to finally delve into his vampire mythology and lore - something he seemed unwilling to do in previous novels.

But this becomes a double edged sword for the novel: it brings the reader to a whole new level within the `Cirque du Freak' world - but so much time is spent in the novel telling the back story that the book suffers from a lack of a plot. There is a beginning and a middle but no real end. There is no climax. There is character growth (a lot of it), but this particular installment finished unfulfilled because the reader is left with more confusion than anything else.

If the reader can get beyond the books lack in plot (this book seems to set the tone that the remainder of the series will stray from self-contained stories into overlapping arc-like structures) they are rewarded with a very rich history, some particularly interesting (both psychologically, biologically and even in view of popular culture) liberties with the vampire. The character's of "Harkart" and the various vampire supporting-cast as well as the mysterious Mr. Tiny are all developed well beyond anything seen in the previous novels. For the first time as a reader I looked beyond the obvious peril and emotion in the book and starting to really care for the characters. Because I have spent more time with them, because they are more fleshed-out, and because his book easily hints at some pretty amazing storytelling in future books.

One of the best Harlequin romances in a long time

This was an excellent book. It was very well written, the characters were very well drawn, the plot was strong with excellent conflict and above all, the love between the hero and heroine was believable at the end. I really liked the main characters. I cried at the end and snuck away from a family party in order to read the last few pages because I couldn't stand to wait. I've read thousands of romances and this one easily goes into the top 5%.

Ok, I admit it. I picked this book up because of the title combined with the cheesy cover. I've never read one of "those romance novels" before. I was sure I'd find a corny romance full of clichés. Boy, was I wrong.

Jolie Tanner has had a rough life. At the age of 12, her mother's affair with married businessman James Rees, Jolie's best friend's father, became public knowledge. Her friend's refuse to speak to her from that point on and Jolie is branded a whore and a man-stealer by the entire town. Jolie learned to put on a hard front so she would not be hurt by the unfair assumptions about her because of her mother's actions. Ten years later, James Rees has passed away and Jolie is collecting her mother's things from the cabin where she would meet James at. At the same time Jolie is coming down the snow covered mountain, James' son Cole happens along. As a major storm comes along, Jolie and Cole get trapped in the gondola, which falls from the wire sending Jolie and Cole in search of shelter on the frigid mountain. Forced to actually talk to one another in the first time since Cole brushed Jolie aside 10 years ago, Jolie and Cole strike a fragile truce. Both are attracted to each other, but how awkward is that? Their parents had a very public and very damaging affair, and they want to date each other? Jolie isn't the trusting type, but Cole is willing to work for it.

Wow. Both Jolie and Cole carried a lot of baggage from the sins of their parents. Jolie had already developed a crush on Cole when she was younger and best friends with his younger sister. The day the affair became public, Cole ruthlessly cut ties with Jolie and avoided her at all costs; however, Cole always kept tabs on her and was attracted to her despite his hatred of her. He knew it was unfair to socially euthanize Jolie for something she didn't do, but family loyalty dictated it so.

I was amazed at the complexity of the story and the characters. Both Jolie and Cole were interesting characters, nothing about them felt clichéd. There were so many obstacles in their path as they sought to be friends and lovers, and I loved how they approached each roadblock. The "Big Obstacle" was handled very well. I liked that it showed both Jolie and Cole growing and changing.

The romance between Jolie and Cole was both hot and believable. They have hated each other for so long, but find that once they set aside their hate they actually get along. Their first night together stuck in the freezing snow while Cole was suffering from hypothermia was done so well. They both can't get a grip on their conflicting emotions and both go from hot to cold and cold to hot so fast. I loved Cole's request for "just one kiss." Well, that was some kiss to remember. I know I still do.

I think I learned my lesson about not judging a book by its cover. I am going to search out Ms. Hunter's backlist because if any are like this than I know I'm going to be in for a treat.

I never suspected!

For some time, the term "romance novel" was given a negative connotation in my mind...though I devoured them anyway.
The man she loves to hate is a perfect example of why those of the snobby literature circles who believe a Harlequin novel is just fluff and would never consider it literature.
While I wish it could have been longer, it was everything a great novel should be. There was angst, but not just some silly, easily overcome with communication angst. The problems separating Jolie and Cole were serious. Author Kelly Hunter did a beautiful job in both creating and resolving them...especially in such a short story.
I highly recommend this book. Don't let the literary snobs who believe a good story must end in tragedy. The true beauty in a great novel is the ability to tap into the readers emotions and bring a realistic set of circumstances from start to finish in a believable manner. I don't mind the occasional tragic ending, but given me happy any day!
