The National Construction Estimator is truly worth ever bit of the purchase price. I have purchased several different catalogs to use in my estimating work for my business. This catalog gives the best averages and comes closest to the actual prices which have resulted in my winning many contracts.

Very detailed

I run an appraisal business and am constantly having to provide estimates for different types of repairs. Once you get used to the format you can provide an estimate that is adjusted to your area and up to date. The CD allows to print or save your estimates so that you may incorporate them into various reports. I would like to see a section similar to RS Means or Swift as for overall construction in the Cost Method is not necessary to give such a detailed cost, a general cost per house category/class and location would be easier.

The book is easy to navigate clear and provides ease of preparing an estimate. The costs are easy to extract. Never got to use the CD as out IT department would not clear it for use.

Updated & Still a Classic must-read for people who value relationships

I read the original One Minute Manager multiple times back in the 80s while working at my first serious job. I’ve threaded my way through a lot of organizations and managers since then, but as I read this new, updated version I found the same foundational principles enhanced to be applicable to business cultures today with different structures, flexible work arrangements, and technology that didn’t exist 30 years ago. What is most impressive about this little book is that the title implies manager, but every person can practice the principles. The world has changed but preserving relationships is still a major objective at work and at home and in our communities.

Why reference a one-minute manager? Through this parable, we learn that it takes very little time for a manager and the team to get good results. In fact throughout this story readers are introduced to principles of success in three actions. The author refers to them as secrets, but the truth is, they are positive actions that every person can perform. These are so powerful, yet take only a moment.

One Minute Goals: Managers work with each person to set 3 to 5 goals, each of which is clearly defined so responsibilities are aligned with accountabilities. Clarity means each goal is concisely written including due dates. When reviewed daily it takes about a minute to read each goal. The goal is held up against what is actually happening and if there’s a discrepancy, corrective action can be taken.

One Minute Praising: To succeed in a job, feedback is an invaluable tool. For people to reach their full potential, they need to know in specific terms what they are doing well and what they need to work on. It takes very little time to praise someone for doing the right things, encourage and infuse them with confidence. Do it soon and be sincere about supporting their success.

One Minute Re-Directs: Reading the first two secrets probably made you wonder just as I did, what happens when things go wrong, because they do. That’s what the re-direct is for. When a mistake is made, the manager and employee quickly meet to review the goal together. They confirm that a mistake was made then the manager uses the re-direct technique. The focus is first on the mistake itself, what the impacts could be, and what could happen as a result. The manager then focuses on the employee so they realize they are better than the mistake, the manager still has confidence in them and trusts them.

One minute can make a difference

The One Minute Manager has been a staple on any leadership book list since 1982, and the revised edition is going to ensure that it stays there. A lot has changed, technologically and professionally, since the ‘80’s, so it just makes sense that “One Minute” changes.

The three “secrets” of,
One Minute Goals - keep them front and center
One Minute Praisings - be honest
One Minute Re-Directs (formerly Reprimand) - for the learner (which we all should be)
have been updated, to make huge differences for a new generation of leaders.

There are so many quotes in this book that will become classic all over again. “Never punish a learner - re-direct their behavior.” “The best minute I spend is the one I invest in people.”

The book is still an easy 100 page read, so take advantage of an afternoon to make a difference for yourself and for those you lead. One minute really CAN make a difference.

A Home Run of a Rewrite ...

I read the first version of this book in 1984, as I transitioned from one job and state to another. I remember thinking that this is how I want to work with people - using short interactions to clarify and motivate. My work has always included an emphasis on brief and direct discussions with those I hope to lead, using Blanchard and Johnson's model.

When I heard that they were updating and releasing a new version, I expected to be re-inspired and I have not been disappointed.

The 21st Century version of the The One-Minute Manager seems more humble and open, and I think this resonates nicely with how the most effective leaders are approaching interactions these days. The style of the book is much the same, but the details have been subtly reworked to make this a modern leadership fable.

Here's a thought ... grab a copy of the original, if you do not already have one, and read it first. Then dive into the new version. Both are relatively short, ready to read, and crammed with solid leadership coaching advice.

I can't wait to see what Blanchard and Johnson do for the Fiftieth Anniversary of the original edition:).

The Wellness Book has been extremely helpful to me and is one of the best investments I have made in myself. I first used this book 10 years ago and was able to establish some healthful living goals and actions for myself that improved my physical conditioning immensely. I continue to use it today. What I really like about this book is that it enables each reader to really focus in on their individual lifestyles, needs, and habits and develop specific, realistic, and individualized action plans for improved and healthful living. The improved physical condition that I realized as a result of focusing on a plan and actions enabled me to climb mountains in the Sierra Nevada. I have also used techniques in this book to successfully address anxiety. This week I pulled the book off of my shelf and am going at it again. I am having fun with this exercise because I can compare my "10 loves" from 10 years ago to my "10 loves" of today and put a plan in place to realize them. Many thanks to the authors for such insightful and all emcompassing work. This book is as useful and current today as it was the day it was written.

my better health "bible"

As someone that has been managing a dual diagnosis of Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis for almost 30 years I've learned to consider and count on myself as my own best advocate for better health. I do my own research and try to balance the best of complimentary and alternative medicine with traditional "western" medicine in order to find what works best for me. This book is one of the best resources I have found to assist in finding the best path to better health. Part of that path is an awareness of what can make one healthy or less healthy; this book helps the reader investigate and track the factors that affect health in general, like for instance nutrition. A second and major focus of this book is stress and how we manage it. There is a section regarding a concept called the Relaxation Response which I have found extremely helpful in identifying and reducing stress.

Of all the books I have read about health, I buy very few, but this is one I would not be without. Highly recommended!

I wanted to buy a book that will teach me something new but instead paid for solicitation to pay more money for seminars, coaching etc...., I guess that's where the money is.

Unfortunately this is not the bible of wholesaling. Lots of generalities and very little, or any, specifics. Example: When Than writes about mailing lists to use in your direct mail campaigns he never tells us where to secure these lists. And so it goes throughout the book. For $18 is a skip. Where do I get a refund?

Disappointing

I really wanted to enjoy this book, it had all the ingredients of a fascinating story, the enigmatic cover of a woman alone on a beach, an unrequited love, a cop looking for a world famous art thief, set in France and the USA, obsessive characters ........... but in the end I just felt quite disappointed.

I thought the main storyline was too coincidental, it just didn't feel plausible to me. If I said what it was it would be a huge spoiler.

I didn't really empathise with the main characters either, Gabrielle, Martin and Archibald. I didn't feel that I really knew them any more by the end than I did at the beginning. They didn't seem to know what they thought and kept changing their minds so I didn't know their inner mind workings, and therefore I found myself not caring too much about what happened to them.

I also wondered whether there was such a thing as product placement in a book? I lost count of the number of times a particular brand of fizzy drink was drunk, or a certain mp3 player was used, I actually found that quite annoying by the end.

I did think it was well translated though, if i didn't know it was originally written in French, I wouldn't have known, the writing flowed very easily and the dialogue seemed natural.

So, even though it was not my type of book I'm sure that some people would enjoy it, after all the cover reads that `over 1 million copies sold worldwide'!

Strange Book of Several Parts, not all of them Good

This is definitely a book of several distinct parts. The first part covers the start of the love affair which is at the heart of the story but is related in a strangely unemotional manner, almost one dimensional. In this early section of the book it is very hard to relate to either of the characters involved or feel bothered about what is happening.

The story then develops and involves a skilful art thief and his relentless pursuer. This again starts off rather slowly without involving the reader significantly, but builds momentum as it becomes clear that there are greater dimensions to the affair than there seem to be on the surface and quite a lot to the interaction between the pursuer and the pursued. The story becomes quite a good read at this stage.

The final part is seriously weird as compared with the fairly worldly occurrences preceding it. I will not drop in any spoilers, but trust me, seriously weird. I guess the conclusion was a reasonably satisfactory and tidy outcome under these circumstances.

So to summarise, this is a strange book which does fall into several distinct parts, not all of which will appeal to all readers. Personally I enjoyed the middle section and was rather surprised when the story subsequently went off in the direction it did. The latter part of the book was interesting but unexpected. Quite a short book, but a worthwhile read in my opinion. I am not sure I will be seeking out the author's other works though.

A Love Story Thriller - Perfect for the Beach

I'm not sure I've ever read a love story thriller before, but in Where Would I be Without You? Guillaume Musso cleverly combines a love story that spans 30 years, with an action-packed thriller.

When Martin and Gabrielle fall in love one summer during their college years little do they know that their paths will cross again many years in the future as Martin tracks an elusive art thief across continents in a bid to bring him to justice.

I'm always nervous reading books that have been translated from their original language (in this case French) but in this instance nothing is lost in translation. From the whirlwind love story to the twists and turns of the thriller I was caught up in the plot from the very first line, and really didn't want to put this one down.

There are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing right up until the end. Another reviewer calls Where Would I be Without You? by Guillaume Musso "the perfect book for a trip to the beach", and I agree with them completely.
