Infidelophobia

It's a funny thing. When one makes the seemingly straightforward observation that the vast, vast majority of terrorist attacks in the world are perpetrated by Muslims, one is told that one is tiptoeing close to the dreaded "Islamaphobia" line, and that more education about Islam is needed to rectify this backwards view of one of the world's great religions.

Then, something even funnier happens. The more one learns about Islam, the MORE accurate the initial impression becomes. This book, a candid discussion of a religious third rail that most Westerners simply refuse to acknowledge, let along confront, throws into stark relief the burdens and perils of both living under Islam, and having the temerity to dare leave it. One finally sees through the veneer of Westernized language to discover that Islam does indeed offer freedom of religion: you can choose Islam, or you can choose death. Islam truly is a religion of peace - so long as the death of "innocents" is narrowly defined to protect only fellow Muslims and the mere fact of being a kaffir is grounds for summary execution. The list goes on and on.

The 23 accounts in here provide gripping, factual representations of just what it is actual Islam holds for those it engulfs. Great Book

This is a great book to read and will explain a lot to those who are looking for what really goes on within the Islamic Faith.

My response to the 1st Review written: Apparantley the reveiwer has never been to Malaysia or Indonesia. IT IS ILLEGAL TO CONVERT FROM ISLAM TO ANOTHER RELIGION in those countries. There is not freedom of religion, unless you want to convert from a non-islamic faith to Islam, but not the other way around. There was just a big court case in Malaysia this last year where a Malaysian lady converted to Christianity and wanted her ID card changed to reflect she was no longer Muslim. This was not allowed and she was also fined, denied jobs, and may possibly receive a jail sentance.

Islam is not a religion of peace, but of violence and war. Read about the history of Islam and its slaughter/genocide of Jews in Medina.

Other good books to read if you want to know the truth are: Secrets of the Koran, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam, and An Inconvient Book.

Want to improve your Spanish? Here's the book for you!

Don Quijote is the book I always meant to read in college! Back then, my Spanish was pretty decent, but today... well, it's not what it used to be. But I got another chance, thanks to this innovative idea.

You can think of this book as an intermediate course/refresher in Spanish. Basically, you get the English version and the Spanish version in one book, and you can choose how much of both you want or need. The Author's Introduction comes first, translated into English, and then it's like a Choose Your Own Adventure: Do I want the Author's Introduction in Spanish? Do I want to jump to the Dedication in Spanish? Or maybe the Dedication in English? At the end of each section, you can make the choice based on how your reading is going.

I love this idea, and I really hope to see more interactive translations like this in the future!

About the Author

Rachel Lee Rubin is Professor of American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston. She is author of Immigration and American Popular Culture (with Jeffrey Melnick, NYU Press) and Jewish Gangsters of Modern Literature, and co-editor of American Popular Music: New Approaches to the Twentieth Century and Radicalism in the South since Reconstruction.

Jeffrey Melnick is Associate Professor of American Studies at Babson College. He is author of A Right to Sing the Blues: African Americans, Jews, and American Popular Song and Black-Jewish Relations on Trial: Leo Frank and Jim Conley in the New South.

From Rico to Rosalita

One of the most important points Rachel Rubin and Jeffrey Melnick make in their book Immigration and American Popular Culture is that migration patterns aren't random. People don't just start spilling out from their countries for no reason, heading to various destinations with no purpose.

Rubin and Melnick use a lot of movies and plays (their chapter on West Side Story and The Young Savages is excellent) to show how American pop culture changed the immigrants, how the immigrants changed the pop culture, and how the pop culture reflected the immigrants' lives back to them and to the society at large.

In some ways pop culture told truths about new immigrants, but in other ways pop culture (sometimes with the connivance of the immigrants themselves) told lies. One of the creators of West Side Story said he'd never been poor and had never met a Puerto Rican. But a lot of the producers of the show were gay. Maybe they were talking about more than one kind of outsider. (At risk of sounding like one of Jerry Seinfeld's jokes, there's nothing wrong with someone from one outsider group recognizing the hardships and pain felt by another.)

Another point Rubin and Melnick make is how immigrant groups that were "working toward whiteness" engaged in a "masquerade" that was similar to the blackface minstrelsy that went back to post-Civil War Reconstruction.

Sometimes the "blacking up" was relatively subtle, like the Jewish Edward G. Robinson playing the Italian Rico in Little Caesar. Sometimes it wasn't so subtle, like Al Jolson on his knees in blackface singing "Mammy."

Some pop culture critics say immigrants used "blackface" (either literal paint or just trying to adopt black "cool") as a way of identifying WITH blacks, whereas some immigrant performers wanted to mock blacks and show a distinction between themselves and blacks.

Another interesting book on this subject that just came out is Black Like You by John Strausbaugh. Strausbaugh compares the generation of immigrant teenagers that made the song "Jump Jim Crow" a hit in the late nineteenth century in New York to the first generation of rock and rollers.

Well, Elvis just took black music and made it okay for white kids to dance to.

I can't help think that whites are always going to give the "appropriators" of black culture more credit for respecting that culture than blacks can, or think they should. Bing Crosby supposedly supported black artists more than anyone with his influence (read White Christmas: The Story of a Song by Jody Rosen), but watching him and Marjorie Reynolds in blackface in Irving Berlin's Holiday Inn makes you cringe.

Another Irving Berlin song goes: "Let me sing of Dixie's charms/Of cotton fields and Mammy's arms/And if my song can make you homesick/I'm happy."

The trouble is, that home never existed.

Barbara Obermeier is the principal of Obermeier Design, a graphic design studio in Ventura, California. She is currently Chair of the Graphic Design program at Brooks Institute.

Ted Padova has worked with digital imaging since 1990. His expertise includes Acrobat, PDF forms, LiveCycle Designer forms, Adobe Design Premium Suite, and Photoshop.

Great help to a software dummy

Between this easy to understand book and online tutorials, learning this software is less daunting. It's fun to play with the features and it helps to find what I need but checking the index. This book is invaluable to me. I'd recommend it to others who need easy to follow instructions on how to become comfortable navigating Elements 15.

Not much has changed

Moved from 13. Not much has changed. If you have a hi def laptop, fonts are tiny. There is no way to change the font size -- a major, major, major failing. I am committed to elements because it does a decent job of organizing photos. Also editor is very capable-saved many pics.
