About the Author
John T. Cacioppo is the Tiffany and Margaret Blake Distinguished Service Professor and Director of the Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience at the University of Chicago. He is a past President of several scientific societies, including the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Social Neuroscience, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and the Society for Psychophysiological Research, and a past Chair of the Psychology Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Among the awards he has received are the Troland Award from the National Academy of Sciences, the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association, a MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health, the Scientific Impact Award from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, the Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions from the Society for Psychophysiological Research, and the Campbell Award and the Theoretical Innovation Prize from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. Cacioppo is a Member of the President's Committee on the National Medal of Science; the Chair of the Board of Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences at the National Research Council and a Member of the National Science Foundation Advisory Committee for the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Directorate; and a former Member of both the Council for the NIH Center for Scientific Review and the Council for the National Institute on Aging.

Laura A. Freberg (Ph.D., UCLA) is Professor of Psychology at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where she teaches courses in Introductory Psychology, Biological Psychology, and Sensation and Perception. Laura's teaching career began when she taught her first college course at Pasadena City College at the age of 23. To better understand the needs of the online education community, she also teaches a variety of psychology courses for Argosy University Online. Laura has received Faculty Member of the Year recognition from Cal Poly Disabilities Resource Center three times (1991, 1994, and 2009) for her work with students with disabilities. She enjoys using technology and social media in the classroom, and is a Google Glass Explorer. Laura serves as the Content Expert Writer for Psychology for Answers.com and as the Bylaws and Archives Committee Chair for the Society for Social Neuroscience. She is a member of the editorial board for Leadership Quarterly. With John Cacioppo of the University of Chicago, she is the co-author of two editions of DISCOVERING PSYCHOLOGY: THE SCIENCE OF MIND (Cengage Learning).

Major disappointment! Terrible

I checked the mail every day for my copy to arrive. I got the CD version, but I didn't want to post the review there as I suspect more would purchase the book. I want to get the word out on this book! I was lured in by the large number of 4 and 5 star ratings this book received. Well, the book came today. Wow. I am almost in tears! Literally. I was looking forward to a sound, intellectual, smart, compilation of legitimate reference sources for both the CISSP and my job. I was deceived. I have read "All in One CISSP", "Exam Cram CISSP", LabSim CISSP, I have even looked at the official guide from ISC(2), which it truly is an intellectual reference source. This book is a waste of my time. I have ejected the CD, packed it back up, and am how hoping that I'll be able to get my money back for such a poor investment!

This disappointment has outdated information, white papers written like they were completed for a high school thesis, and advice that would probably get someone fired if followed in the real world. I read two articles. One on Phising and one on Self Audits. I thought both would be a good chance to get into some details on information security. However, the Phishing whitepaper was of the depth of a AM news/entertainment show on the dangers of opening unknown e-mails. The Self Auditing Hacking, which had alot of opportunities to be technical focused on social engineering and getting physical access to a computer. Even a rookie Info Sec person (not an InfoSec Manager) knows those are the oldest tricks in the book (pun not originally intended, but after reviewing, it seems appropriate). We don't need a bloated book, over $50 or even $150 to tell us common knowledge.

Alice Faye Horton was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in Forrest City, Arkansas. She has worked in the field of education for 36 years and currently serves as the Director of Programs for students with special needs in the Watson Chapel School District in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. In addition to children's books, Alice enjoys writing poetry. Her inspiration comes from the observation of everyday triumphs and struggles. She is inspired by the innocence of children, especially her six-year old granddaughter who provides her with a continuous supply of ideas and material for her writings. Alice is married to James Horton and is the mother of two young adults, Damon and Dana.

• One in five US workers has had sex with a co-worker during work hours. Full sex, that is. 44 per cent of men and 35 per cent of women have had at least some sexual contact at work.
• One third of UK young professionals are hungover at least twice a week on working days. Two thirds admitted to having called in sick due to alcohol at least once in the previous month.
• 70 per cent of Internet porn sites are accessed during the 9 to 5 working day.
• More than half of the UK's 14.5 million pet owners say they would need between two and five days off work to grieve for a dead pet, while 10 per cent said they would need as much as two weeks.
• Monday (23 per cent) and Friday (25 per cent) are the days most commonly taken off sick by UK employees. Wednesday is the most rarely taken (8 per cent).
• UK doctors receive 9 million 'suspicious' or 'questionable' requests each year for sick notes.

David Bolchover writes frequently on business and management issues for The Times and The Sunday Times as well as a number of other national newspapers and specialist publications. His first book, The 90-Minute Manager, outlines the lessons which business managers can learn from football managers. Previously, he was employed for several years in a large office. • One in five US workers has had sex with a co-worker during work hours
• 70% of internet porn sites are accessed during the 9 to 5 working day
• One in three midweek visitors to a major UK theme park is pulling a sickie from work
• In the UK alone, doctors receive 9 million (equivalent to the entire population of Sweden) ‘suspect’ requests for sick notes each year
• 14.6% of US office workers surf the web constantly
• Over half the UK’s 14.5 million animal owners said that they would need between two and five days off work to grieve for the loss of a treasured pet. 10% said they would need as much as two weeks.

The Living Dead (2005) by David Bolchover is a book about people working in offices who do little if anything of use. It's an examination of how people become unmotivated and disenchanted but remain in jobs of dubious use. These people Bolchover refers to as 'The Living Dead'.

The book starts strongly with the author describing his own path of increasing pay and decreasing work. Bolchover then looks at how looking for meaning in a job is also critical and that the meaninglessness of much office work facilitates disenchantment. He then describes how nonsense and deceit lead to many living dead jobs with nobody willing to say that the jobs that they do are not worth doing.

Managers are next targeted and the dismal abilities of many middle managers duly mocked. The lack of great ability in the vast majority of senior management is also examined.

Finally the book describes a possible antidote to the rot by contracting out many of the services of large companies to small companies or individuals. Bolchover believes that by paying these smaller entities for what they do, rather than paying people for their attendance in an office better results will be achieved.

The book describes a common condition for employees of large companies and those who work in the public sector. It's surely true that many people do little and even more do work that is of dubious utility in large organisations.

The recommendations of the book are, however, far less certain. The problems of contracting out things all the time are evident to people who have been involved in contracting things out. Often what is delivered is not what was sought and the company that provided the service has little interest in really solving the problem.

Also, people who do little are often dealt with by organisations that can make them redundant or fire them. Doing enough to get by is probably far more common. The book also glosses over the role of the market in weeding out companies that have too many people doing too little and the way in which companies are often reorganised to dispense with functions of little value. The public sector lacks the market feedback and information to know.

The book is fun and is pleasantly short. Bolchover hasn't padded it out with needless verbiage. The condition described of people being paid to not do much or at least not nearly as much as they could is certainly common. The conclusions might not be correct but the diagnosis of the disorder is definitely insightful.

How to survive a deadly office

With wry British wit, David Bolchover skewers life in large corporations and exposes the extent of a phenomenon he calls "the living dead:" the masses of employees who are disengaged from their work, unproductive and unmotivated. Bolchover's account of his own experience of falling through the cracks of a corporate behemoth is hilarious. But far from being just an amusing caricature of life in big companies, his book is a thoughtful consideration of the economic costs of boredom and inefficiency. He suggests ways that companies - and national economies - need to evolve to address these problems. Corporate leaders interested in fully utilizing their human capital will find this book insightful. And, if you feel yourself slowly turning into a zombie in a business suit, Bolchover offers insight into how to breathe life into your career. We highly recommend this book to students of organizational behavior and anyone who has ever played computer solitaire at the office.

Terrific artbook

[[VIDEOID:mo1QLIOLZ2V76RX]]This is quite possibly the best Assassin's Creed artbook so far. It's a terrific video game artbook.

It's a big 192-page hardcover published by Titan Books with most of the artworks are printed big to the page edges.

Many concept paintings featured are actually collage of photographs and art. Look closely and you'll see photos erased and digitally manipulated to form the shape and composition required.

You might that that the photo and art collage style is cheating. The thing is, they look amazing. As concept paintings, they capture the mood and atmosphere really well. This is in part because the colour values are captured correctly, resulting in a convincing environment. The photo and art collage style when not well done, even by a bit, can result in a fake look. Well, all the paintings in this book look great to me. The end result looks more like art than photos.

A nice improvement over the previous artbook The Art of Assassin's Creed III is that details are no longer hidden in shadows. Even when they are hidden, they are done so suggestively, with details fading to vague masterfully.

Character designs are mainly of the pirates, and of course of the main character Edward Kenway. Costume designs are really detailed. Who knew 18th century pirates can be so fashionable. Artist Patrick Lambert's rough paintings look expressive and just great.

There are lots of environment art. Many of the environment art pieces are inspired by location visits.

The design team visited Spanish city Havana in order to create the Havana in the game, a beautiful coastal town that is described by Spanish colonist at "Key to the New World" at that time. It's lively, full of people, activities. There are not just beautiful town houses, but also the poorer middle class people with tattered roofs. The other places are Kingston, a city in Jamaica, or as pirates claim the "Wickedest City on Earth". There's also Nassau, city of Bahamas. For Nassau, there's also a concept art inspired directly by the Queen's Staircase.

Other locations included are the fortified shipwreck, fishing villages built on stilts, tropical hideouts, Mayan temples, mangroves and coves, jungles, campfire night scenes and more. Every location has several paintings to convey the idea of the whole place. There's even a whole city designed, Port au Prince, that was cut from the game. At least the art remains in the book.

Designs for the pirate ships are detailed, interiors inclusive. There are several ships, namely Jackdaw, Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge, Black Bart's The Royal Fortune, Benjamin Hornigold's The Benjamin, The Governor, The Ranger, Calico Jack, Spanish Man of War and other ships from the British Navy. Yes, lots of ship. And there are also many paintings with pirates working on the deck, big ships, small boats, on fire or blown to bits.

There are also scenes from underwater, with submerged shipwrecks, and also sharks with eyes that say "We want to eat you".

Ubisoft art team has truly put together some amazing art, and well compiled by author Paul Davies.

Highly recommended to those who like concept art and fans of the game.

Pirates, Jungle, Treasures Galore!

I want to make a quick note, I've ordered the actual game for the PS4, so I obviously haven't played it yet (as it doesn't come out for another couple of weeks as of this writing) but I bought this book anyway because I needed something to hold me over until I can finally boot up the disc.

For anyone in the same boat and worried that this book might contain spoilers for the game, I can tell you it really doesn't spoil anything at all, at least from what I can tell. You get a look at different locations, characters, and some ships, but it doesn't give away any major plot points or twists from the images/descriptions presented within its pages. So feel free and safe to browse and skim and read cover to cover without fear of ruining your eventual gaming experience.

As for the book itself, it's hardcover with a nice dust jacket that has embossed lettering. The inside panels of the front and back panels is lined with what I assume is a map of the game's worlds/islands. The pages are sorta thick and of nice quality. Nothing feels cheap here. The book covers sections of different locations, characters, some weapons, and ships among other things. Most illustrations are nice and bright (fitting with the tropical theme I guess) and are usually pretty big, covering at least half the page most of the time. I will say though I was expecting there to be more computer/3D renderings of weapons, characters, etc, but most of the art (in fact, maybe ALL of it) is the brush/paint style (which I'm sure was still done via computer). So anyone expecting clear cut images of people and ships and stuff, you may be somewhat disappointed. But for those who enjoy the particular painting style and are moreso just looking to get a good understanding of the colors/atmosphere of this game, you should be pretty happy with this.

I like pirates, and buried treasure, and the ocean and all that, so I find the art in this book to be very beautiful. It may not be the best video game art book I've ran across, but it manages to show how the themes and moods of the upcoming game came to be, and that's good enough for me. It's a nice addition to my collection, which I'll enjoy looking over time and time again.

Great Concept Art from Assassin's Creed IV

Wow, what a stunning art book that amazes you at every page. This book is filled with behind the scenes concept art from Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag. The book offers a highly detailed look at every city, weapon, character, ship, and jungle that you can explore in the game. The art in this book gives the game itself, so much more justice, and makes you appreciate the game much more. You can even fell the emotion on every page.
