The Best SAS Book Out There

When I went into statistics, I already had a programming background and knew a dozen or so languages. If you understand basic programming concepts you can usually just find a book summarizing a particular language, read through it, and you have a decent grasp of the language. But I couldn't do that with SAS. SAS is a bit of an odd language, not following in the typical C paradigm, but that wasn't really the problem. The problem was that the books weren't written by programmers, they were written by statisticians.

This is a book written by a programmer. This is the book I wish I'd had when I started programming SAS. This is the book I go to when I run into a problem in SAS. I go to it because the information is in there, and it's well organized so I can find it.

I know some people new to programming who found this book too daunting. I can see not needing this book if you're just using SAS/Base to get your data into SAS/Stat. But if you want to be a serious SAS/Base programmer, this is the book you want.

Not worth even the kindle price.

I got this book as a lark on my kindle, basically test-driving it before I considered buying it. Though the images inside weren't as bad as some that I've seen in these "publish-it-yourself" art books (that's not saying anything, as those I've seen have mostly had horrible reproductions) the images are still of only nominal resolution, with many being lower-res than I can find of the same images on Zorn's Wikipedia Commons page. You get some with little crop/zooms of details of the image, yet for the most part the resolution quality is mediocre at best. Though the images may faithfully keep Zorn's colors, because of the low resolution you miss his beautifully efficient brush-strokes, which is actually what I love most about Zorn's work.

I actually recommend two routes, one cheaper the other pricier: either collect Zorn's work online, as it's all generally in the public domain and so it's all proliferated pretty commonly, or just invest in one of the higher-end Zorn artbooks.

THE PUBLICATION (WITH SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL) OF EARLIER LECTURES BY MARK PROPHET

Elizabeth Clare Prophet (1939-2009) founded The Summit Lighthouse with her husband Mark Prophet (1918-1973), which became the Church Universal and Triumphant in 1975. The Church lost members after her failed prophecies of nuclear war in the 1980s-1990s, and Alzheimer's Disease caused her to retire from the ministry in 1999. This book is associated with The Lost years of Jesus; it also has three follow-up volumes. [NOTE: Page numbers below refer to the 316-page paperback edition.]

The first chapter of this 1986 book states, "there is little question that there ARE lost teachings of Jesus, many of them given in secret, that are vitally important to each of us. Clues to their existence abound, many in plain sight... starting right under our noses in the New Testament... in proportion to the number of occasions on which Jesus is said to have taught, a surprisingly small number of verses record just what those teachings were. Some accounts show Jesus teaching for several hours or more without including one word of what he said. For example, at the feeding of the five thousand [Mk 6:34]... He must have been saying something of note... But none of the four Gospels ... record what Jesus said... Luke [23:13-27] also relates the story of Jesus' walk with the disciples on the road to Emmaus... Neither the passages [Jesus explained] nor their attendant explanation is given." (Pg. xx-xxi)

The Foreword states, "In these four volumes we bring you the most precious instruction we have received for lifetimes from our Good Friend and the Shepherd of our souls. While the words and images may not be those Christ used two thousand years ago, you will find the heart of the message he imparted... This book consists of fourteen lectures delivered by Mark between 1965 and 1973, illuminated by the lessons Jesus has given us in dictations, sermons and letters over the past thirty years." (Pg. lxiv-lxvi)

The book notes, "[Origen] was the first great theologian of the Church, whose doctrines were later anathematized... Fragments of his extraordinary writings reveal many of the Lost Teachings of Jesus that our Lord gave to him through his meditation on the scriptures." (Pg. 32)

The book explains, "The term 'Great White Brotherhood' is not racial; it refers to the spiritual body of world servers... who serve humanity from the level of the Ascended Masters (the same level from which Ascended Master Jesus Christ functions) and the level of the angelic beings... It is certainly not intended to supplant Christ. It IS Christ in action. In fact, it is Christ's Mystical Body." (Pg. 168)

It observes, "Since the Lord's teaching in its entirety is most likely forever lost to this world... it is up to us who liVe in the present to discover it wherever we can... Karma and reincarnation---now that was a major part of the Lost Teachings. A real missing link. Something you'd always suspected even before you discovered Jesus had gone to India and the Far East. You don't know whether you actually BELIEVE you lived before. But it's as logical as any other explanation of the afterlife... In fact, it's THE missing link---answering many questions that for scholars and the faithful alike have ended at the proverbial brick wall." (Pg. 224-225)

It concludes, "The burden of proof is on modern Christianity... For two thousand years Christians have been playing with half a deck... How are the Christians... ever going to prove that THEY have all the essentials of Jesus' teaching? Or that your file ... DOESN'T contain the Lost Teachings of Jesus? Even if you could never prove conclusively that you HAD uncovered the Lost Teachings, no one could prove you hadn't... So in the final analysis, you've proven that something was lost and you've discovered something that could be it. Now, you say, the controversy will rage in the realm of belief. But isn't that what religion is all about?" (Pg. 226-227)

Not for the layman

This book is serious, it contains tons of charts which I believe to be ephemeris, but I'm no expert. Not for the faint of heart, this book had me feeling more muddle-headed then when I picked it up! Also lots of formulas including, one for converting longitude into right ascension with latitude? Whatever that means. Confusing for the layman.

If you develop Joomla templates, you need this book

Finally, a book on Joomla templates written by a member of the official Joomla project, Angie Radtke.

If you have used Joomla, you already know Angie's work. She designed and developed the Beeze templates that come installed with every Joomla distribution since Joomla 1.5.

This book does a great job looking under the hood of Joomla's template architecture. She goes over how to tweak templates with CSS, how to use template overrides, a chapter covering MooTools basics, and how to modify the Beeze templates that come with Joomla. If you already develop Joomla templates, you need to buy this book because it will greatly expand your skill-set.

I have been developing custom Joomla templates since 2007 and this book taught me several new tricks, like how MooTools works, create better error pages and best ways to modify the CSS used in Joomla error messages, etc.

What the book doesn't do is provide step-by-step instructions on how to create a Joomla template from scratch. (Although there are plenty of good online tutorials that can show you how.) I would not recommend this book to Joomla newbies and folks who do not have a good understanding of CSS and HTML. You don't need to know PHP and JavaScript to get a lot from this book, but it certainly helps if you do.

Overall a great book that deserves a place in every Joomla developer's library.

Agonizing - a definite "skip"

Agonizing.

This book is about Joomla templates, right? It says so right on the cover. So, out of 278 pages of real "stuff" (excluding introduction, index, appendix), why are the first 90 pages devoted to everything but Templates?

Author Angie Radtke has great qualifications, but if I wanted to know her opinion about website accessibility, color balance, PHP basics, CSS and HTML basics, the aesthetics of font selection, and general website design advice, I'd have bought a book about, oh say, "Website Design."

Here are some things I just don't need to be told in a book about Joomla templates:
- "In many cases the choice of colors is determined in advance by the corporate design of the client."
- "People who are blind tend to have well-developed acoustic as well as tactile senses..."
- "Firebug is one of the most glorious inventions for template designers."

With that said, the other 180 pages of the book do a pretty good job of explaining the role of templates and how to use them. The last 60 pages walk the user though a productive, detailed exercise of designing the front end of a Joomla website and illustrate template use in a rewarding way. If anything, those 60 pages are the nugget of value in this book. (In fact, if I had to take a guess, I'd say Ms. Radtke wrote the last 180 pages, was told by the publisher to make it longer to justify the target size and price of the book, and that she then added the first third, but that's just me.)

I took my lumps on this one and proceeded to the Joomla "Programming" book in the same series, which I liked very much, so I haven't searched more for templates-only guides on Joomla.

An odd mix of the elementary and the complex

I'm a beginning level web developer who has created a basic Joomla website but wanted to learn how to customize a template for increased style control. I've looked at several Joomla! templates and found that they are typically composed of many different files, making it almost impossible to figure out where to start*. I was hoping that this book on Joomla templates might explain how these are typically set up, but was disappointed in this.

Many rather basic topics are covered in this book, but Radtke often inexplicably uses advanced undefined terms and concepts in the midst of elementary explanations, leaving beginners in the dust. For instance, on page 37,in the context of the introduction of HTML5, Radtke says "The new semantically significant elements are particularly interesting," with no further explanation (I have a clue, but this could have been stated in much plainer language). On page 38, when she explains that css statements can be added in external files (already knew that!), she provides a code sample to accomplish this, but doesn't mention where this code would be placed among the many template files. A brief explanation of how style sheets are integrated into a Joomla website would have been nice here. It is also unfortunate that while this book was copyrighted in 2013, it does not discuss either of the default templates packaged with Joomla!3 (released in 2013), but instead deals with the old Beez2.

As there are not very many reference books available for Joomla!, this is still a useful reference for those of us who prefer to learn by reading. The table of contents shows the broad scope of this book, and dutiful perseverance will still reward relative beginners with some information useful at that level. However, it could (and should) have been so much better....

*A refreshing exception is Jaxstorm-Blue, with all of its css in one file, making it a good learner's tool.
