We laughed we cried and laughed again... unable to put this book down until we finished it. LOVE IT.

I purchased this book for my daughter who has followed Shane Dawson for several years now. We both have been a avid follower of Shane. We decided to read the book together. We laughed to tears and then we cried and laughed again. I must say that this is one of the most entertaining books that I have read in a long time. My daughter never liked reading but she couldn't put this book down. She hopes that he will write another one and can't wait to have him read it to her as she plans to purchase that down load as well. I think anyone with a sense of humor would love this book young or old. I am so glad that I purchased this book for her. It gives an inside story to Shane and his personal experiences though some are sad most are extremely funny. I would highly recommend this book as a gift or just for yourself regardless of your age. We all have done similar things in our life but he has put it together in an amazingly enjoyable book that you once you start reading you simply can't put down. It was like four am when we finished it. A must have for your book shelf.

There is a reason that this almost has a perfect five star rating on Amazon. It's THAT good.

I am soooooooooo not the target demographic for this book. I'm close to forty years old and rarely watch youtube. Before this book I had no real clue who Shane Dawson was. I maybe had seen a few of his videos. My daughter begged me for the book and I'm excited whenever she wants to read. I came and looked at reviews before purchasing it and they are overwhelmingly positive with the exception is some parents. I decided to order and it and read it before she did.

I freaking loved it. It literally had me laughing out loud (my strange addiction- which isn't a funny story per se but the visual picture I got of him in a bathroom sink screaming about the devil... well it threatens to send me into hysterics right now)and also crying. (Denny's and Death). I felt like I really learned a lot about him and I LIKED him. No his language isn't clean, yeah sometimes he's a little gross (dude has some intestinal ISSUES) , but he just comes across as genuine. If I tell my little girl that life isn't always gonna be so bad, I probably get my eye roll. Shane tells his funny/tragic stories and she has hope.

My daughter is almost 11. As her mother I'm ok with her reading this. There was only one part I thought might be a little inappropriate but on the whole FOR MY CHILD I think is a great book. Of course you might have a different relationship with your child. My daughter is wise beyond her years. We discuss things like gay rights, politics and religion. She never doesn't ask a question she is wondering about. "Mom what's a prostitute? Mom what's masterbate mean? Mom why are people racist? Etc...

I'm so glad I ordered this book. Shane Dawson has a new fan in me!

I absolutely love his humor

I have been following Shane Dawson on YouTube since he started. I absolutely love his humor. Some of the essays in this book are over the top hilarious and some of them are downright wholesome. I love it. I will probably buy his other book soon considering I loved this one so much. Learning about his experiences with everything has made me realize, he is just in fact another human being in this world with emotional baggage. That's probably why I relate to him so much. I just wanted to share that I do recommend this book for people who get his sense of humor and if you are on the fence of buying it, there is probably a great reason why you haven't yet. For me, it has been an emotional roller coaster that I actually enjoy. And to be honest, I haven't been interested in reading a book, front to back, in YEARS. Probably since high school. So the fact that I read this book in nearly one night, forcing myself to put it down and get some sleep, makes me think that I spend my time and money well. Believe me when I say this but it's definitely not for everyone.

Kinda weak

There's probably some stuff in here that would be useful for a manager who is completely clueless, but I didn't find much that would be useful insight for someone further along than that. I gave it a few chapters, because a friend I respect recommended it, but then gave up. I guess the book is okay for what it is, but it isn't likely to make any lasting improvement in your relationship with your employees. It generally comes from a perspective that has been somewhat popular in recent years, to the detriment of business, one that says:
- Process is more important than substance.
- Management can be detached from leadership.
- Management is more about skill than about character.
Employees follow and build loyalty to leaders who lead, not administrators who manage. When you've proved yourself as a leader, when you've proved (by consistent actions over time) to your employees that you really have their best interests at heart, and when you've shown that you'll work with those who want to improve, but will deal decisively with those who poison the work environment, then amazingly enough, employees tend to start doing what they ARE supposed to do.
I'd recommend skipping this one and picking up a copy of Leadership as a Lifestyle, by Hawkins, instead.

Good Basics and Several Great Tips

Talk about a super long title that clearly states what a book is about! When you pick up "Why Employees Don't Do What They're Supposed To Do and What To Do About It" by Ferdinand F. Fournies, there's no doubt what you think you are getting. The question is of course if you DO get that and how valuable the information is.

There are apparently 16 different reasons why an employee might not do what they should. These are: They don't know why, they don't know how, they don't know what, they think your way won't work, they think their way is better, they think something else is more important, there are no positive consequences, they think they ARE doing it, they are rewarded for NOT doing it, they are punished for doing it, they anticipate negative consequences, there are no negative consequences for NOT doing it, there are obstacles they can't fix, they have personal limits, they have personal problems, and the task is simply impossible. That's quite a lot of reasons for one "problem"! Just having that list can really be helpful. A manager who thinks "My employee is simply an idiot! I told him what to do!" might take a step back and realize there really IS a problem that can be fixed, once it is identified.

I realize that a lot of these items are common sense - but it's amazing how many times in the workplace that I've seen bad managers completely ignore the real problem and just yell at an employee. That rarely helps!

Now, while the basic list is good, I do have some issues with this book. The first is that the book opens telling you "Now a manager could be assaulted or killed by the employee [for not handling problems effectively]." Good God Almighty. Talk about a nasty way to sell a book - "read me or you could DIE!!!"

The book does a good job of laying out each type of problem in detail, and then giving specific solutions. You might say "they're common sense" but obviously if so many managers out there are NOT handling these situations well, they need a little kick in the behind. Maybe they're just too stressed and aren't actually thinking about the problem. Maybe this book will help give them that extra insight they need into using a good solution.

One thing that bothers me is that the book makes it seem that every problem CAN be solved by following these few easy steps. There's a small FAQ in the back that says in essence "Oh yeah, sometimes this fails and you'll have to demote or fire the person." It would have been more helpful if in each section there were the regular tips, but also "drastic steps" and then "when to give up". I suppose they want to be positive - but if they give you only a few things to try, and they aren't working, it would be good to have a progression of what to do next. To keep trying those same things becomes an exercise in futility and frustration. In fact, it's sort of funny, he says at one point that, if these tips don't work, go buy my next book to learn what to do then :)

Still, it's a good basic primer for the new manager of how to handle a variety of situations. I definitely have worked in many situations where managers did NOT know these things and the environment suffered because of it. If you feel like you already know these things, borrow the book at the library and skim through - you might pick up a tip or two. If you're a new manager, then I would suggest buying this. It's the sort of book that you read in the bathroom, going just over a single chapter, and focussing on how to handle that one specific issue. You're probably going to run into all of these issues over time, if you stay on a managerial path.

Good analysis of 16 reasons for unmet expectations

Really helpful book! Fournies gives 16 reasons why employees (and maybe peers or others) fail to meet expectations. The book doesn't just give a list, though. It gives succinct insight into how to tell which is the reason in a particular case. Then, once we have the cause identified, it gives good advice on how to correct the root cause. I found it very helpful in handling failed expectations of others -- sort of Sun Tsu's *The Art of War* without the executions. I recommend this book as a tool for managers at all levels to turn frustration into solutions.

A note to other reviewers about Admiral Kirk's teaching job

A just wanted to add a note to all of those who say No Way about Kirk's teaching. I hate to tell you, but, what do you think he was doing at the Acadamy at the begining of The Wrath of Khan? One of the things this book did well is bridge some of the history leading up to the second movie, which finds Kirk, Spock and McCoy working at the Acadamy, while Chekov is first officer under Capt. Terril. This is all Star Trek canon, and this book does an excellent job bringing us up to that point.

Not bad, if not great.

There are a few quibbles that I have with this book, most notably that it's difficult to place it on the Star Trek timeline. The intro by the author says that it is a story that arose out of the same brainstorming sessions that produced the movie "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home", which would suggest a similar time-frame. But that concept clearly doesn't work, as the events in the second and particularly the third Star Trek movies have obviously not happened (notably, the death and return of Spock and the destruction of the Enterprise). Thus, given those facts and a few hints toward the end of the book, it seems likely that it takes place between movie #1 (Star Trek: The Motion Picture") and movie #2 (Star Trek: The Wrath Of Khan"). It would have helped if that had been made a little clearer a little earlier, but truly, this is a minor quibble.
The problem is, the book itself isn't really good enough to cause one to be willing to overlook minor quibbles. It isn't terrible; the writing is fairly good, the characters recognizable as themselves, the dialogue plausible, the minor characters from the Enterprise and the missing science team interesting enough. But the characters that the Enterprise crew must interact with range from vanilla personalities with no real spark to stock villains with no real spark. And the plot itself, while not without promise, never fulfills that promise. There was never really any sense of drama, never any sense of compelling interest. It was, quite honestly, mediocre.
If you're a Trek fan with a real need for a fix, there's no reason not to read this one; it's a perfectly acceptable read. But if you aren't desperate for a Trek story, there's no particularly driving reason TO read it, either.

Slow start, better paced middle, fannish finish

I believe this was Weinstein's first foray in Trek novel writing. He had previosuly written an episode of the Trek animated series. The problem with this book is that while it is a very good story, it takes a while to build up any interest in it with some very plodding prose that does pick up in pace as it goes along. The problem is that the pace gets too fast that one is left with a very quickly resolved ending. It almost seems like an episode of The Next Generation series. Give us some buildup and then finish it fast to hit the right page count. And the tacked on ending of Kirk and company parting ways seems so contrieved.

This explains a lot

Fathers of daughters with eating disorders need help understanding the disorder and how to overcome their frustration with not being able to "fix" their daughter. This book opens the door to begin the process of restoring a more normal and effective role for the father.

While not the most "user friendly" writing style for the non-professional, it is easily understood and offers much information to help men (and the women they love) deal effectively with everyone impacted by the eating disorder...themselves, their spouse and, most importantly, their child.

Although I am a physician, I am also the father of a daughter with an eating disorder and read this book upon the advice of her therapist. I am very glad to say that it has started my daughter and me on a path to a much richer relationship and that she is on the road to recovery.

This book is different from most eating disorder books because of its focus on the father. It really gives you a new perspective on how fathers are actually involved in a daughter's life without actually doing anything. As a recovering anorexic and bulimic, I found this book helpful in opening my mind up about the complex interactions that helped form my problems. Understanding the root of the problem makes solving it easier (but still not that easy)

Disappointment to anyone seeking in-depth analysis

I was hoping this book would take a much more academic, intellectual look at psychoanalysis and the study of father-daughter relationships. Instead, the language and tone are simplistic, the anecdotes are quaint and pleasant, and the overall depth of research seems minimal. It may be a fine place to start as an overview on the topic, but this is definitely not the book to buy if you're searching for anything serious or memorable.
