From Publishers Weekly
Attorney Rosenberg puts his professional expertise to good use in this tale of academic infighting and legal intrigue, the sequel to 2011’s Death on a High Floor. Jenna James has traded a career in corporate law for a tenure-track position as a law professor at UCLA. Her assured ascent to the lofty peaks of academic job security hits a road bump when Primo Giordano, a student with an implausible story about lost treasure, dies after drinking poisoned coffee in James’s office. James becomes a suspect and must also contend with a spiteful colleague capitalizing on the death to sabotage her bid for tenure, as well as a series of suspicious accidents. Was Primo the intended victim of the poison—or was it James? She turns to an assortment of allies, from the dead boy’s ex-girlfriend to a former murder defendant, for answers. While the prose is at best serviceable, the intertwined mysteries at the book’s core neatly combine the entertainingly sordid and the believably absurd.

I can't do it
By Amazon Customer
The main character really grates on my nerves. She is full of herself . The author includes absolutely every thought ,observation and inner conversation she has...BORING!! I've been reading and have been waiting for something interesting to happen.

His writing is similar to this passage I made up:

Main Character:

"I drove 5.3 miles to work, found a parking spot and pulled into it. I noticed a blue car next to me. I wonder who owns the blue car. I have never seen it before. I wonder if a new faculty was hired and I didn't know about it. I got out of my car and walked to the building entrance. It was early and I was the only person there.

It's unusual for me to be up so early. I haven't even had coffee and I really need coffee. I am not an early person. Faculty and High Powered Attorneys don't have to get up early like other people. We can show up whenever we feel like it. When I get to my office I will make a pot of coffee. My coffee maker is one of those designer machines that make coffee better than Starbucks. It has a steamer and it makes really hot coffee. I bought it when I was in Italy a few years back. Customs almost wouldn't let me bring it on the airplane but I told them I was a High Powered Attorney and that did the trick.

As I walkind into my building I saw the mascot of our school and realized that meant the big game was imminent. (and on and on about every minute detail about the mascot...everything you never want or need to know) I opened the main door and walked up three flights of stairs, which I noticed had been power cleaned during the night, where my office is around a corner neslted in a private nook. I love that private nook. It reminds me of my days as a High Powered Attorney. I had the best office because I am amazing. I don't know why I left that high powered career. I was so good at being a high powered attorney but I am really a rising star here and I am on the fast track to tenure (because I am really spectacular).

I searched through my handbag for my key. I realized I should have had it ready to save time or maybe I should have a special pocket for my key to save time in the mornings. I know a friend of mine keeps her key on a chain she wears around her neck. I think that is pretty cheesy. I would never do that, since I am on the fast track to tenure (because I am amazing) When I got to my office the door was already open"....

when she sees the door open and enters her office something happens that has potential to be frightening and mysterious but the author couldn't pull it off...he didn't leave anything to the reader's imagination. All the chatter before ,during and after the encounter spoiled the "hook" and momentum that was needed to keep readers' attention.

So far, i've read nothing about Long Knives or anything about murder at all.

The book is 497 pages long. I deleted it from my Kindle Library

Emotionless
By Liz
I put this book down several times with no intention of finishing it, but I did finally read it in its entirety.

I kept going back because the story was interesting. I kept putting it away because the characters were so emotionally detached. I guess I could never get emotionally attached to what might happen to them.

The main character, most of all, was not likeable, and not very bright for someone who had been a top notch lawyer at a big firm and currently teaching law at UCLA. She does a lot of dumb things. (Here's this evidence of poisoned coffee so I'm going to keep it in my fridge at home and when the cops find it while executing a search warrant, I'm not going to tell my defense team about it until sometime later.) Or, while worrying about her salary being much smaller than previously, she rents a Ferrari and buys a $2000 dress for a date.

All of the characters were pretty flat. I think Mr. Rosenberg can tell an interesting tale. He just needs some guidance on creating interesting characters. The protagonist even describes herself and her lover as emotionally unavailable. I think that summed up the entire book.

My true rating is 2.5 stars.
