About the Author
RICHARD N. BOLLES has led the job-search field for more than 40 years. A member of Mensa and the Society for Human Resource Management, he has been the keynote speaker at hundreds of conferences. Bolles holds a bachelor's degree cum laude in physics from Harvard University, a master's degree from General Theological (Episcopal) Seminary in New York City, and three honorary doctorates.

See Especially the "Conversation Tips"

What I like most about the PARACHUTE series is the author. If you don’t know it already, it will be clear after reading this book, that Richard Bolles is PASSIONATE about job search and advancing careers. His passion for the subject shows up loud and clear in this latest installment in the series.

It is easy to see why this series has been so wildly successful. Honestly, you would be absolutely NUTS to not read this book (or a recent edition.) The author has extensive experience in the field, and backs up his ideas with impressive evidence. That is, the recommendations here are not theoretical—they are founded in decades of experience. Furthermore, the material in PARACHUTE is presented in a clear, easy to read format.

There is one priceless section--do not miss "Conversation Tips." The author knows WHY the interviewer is asking you certain questions! For example, Bolles notes in Tip #13 that "Employers don't care about your past; they only ask about it as a way to predict your FUTURE behavior.” If one knows what the interviewer is really looking for, you can plan accordingly.

The author warns the reader to watch out when the interviewer suggests, "Tell me about yourself." Bolles: "How you answer that question will determine your fate during the rest of the interview." This question if really a test of sorts, Bolles explains. What they are really doing is a sneaky way of asking, “What experience, skills, or knowledge do you have, that are relevant to the job I am trying to fill.” So, forget your hobbies and personal history--that's not relevant.

This edition has updated suggestions on how to best use social/networking sites. In LinkedIn, for example, Mr. Bolles points out the importance of completely filling out your user profile, so that prospective employers can get an accurate picture of your qualifications. Bolles notes that surveys always show that not having a picture is a turn-off.

Finding your mission in life will not be trivial--and it will not be quick. Despite the stress coming from a job search, being forced to find a job can have beneficial effects on our whole life. It offers "a chance to make some fundamental changes in our whole life. It marks a turning point in how we live our life."

I suspect many readers of prior editions will be wondering if this year’s edition is really all that different from recent editions. Is it really necessary to go out and buy the very latest model? In my opinion, if you have an edition just 1 or 2 years old, you are not missing much. Many of the changes in the “2017” version are related to internet services. For instance, the author includes the latest and greatest job search engines that were not listed in prior editions. As another example, the author includes updates to the very latest career counselors.

All in all, I found WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE 2017 to be an outstanding work. It continues the string of top-notch career guides by the #1 expert in the field. As Mr. Bolles explains at the end of the book, PARACHUTE is not written by committee—it is personally researched and written by the author. If you are serious about your career, you would be nuts to not read this book (or at least a recent edition.) Some of the appendices will certainly be controversial, because the author (a former Episcopal priest) makes his own religious beliefs clear. It is indeed very unusual for a job-search book to include exhortations on self-examination and one’s mission in life.

Helpful Book if You Want to Make a Career Change

I loved this book. I have been working on how to become an ex-lawyer for a while now and this book helped me find my way. After reading the book and learning new things about myself, namely my strengths and weaknesses, I made a career change. The book also helped me with my cover letter.

A Humble Master of lettering

This book is probably one of the finest examples of logo and letterhead creation done by highly talented, top-end, design studios. Doyald young is able to share and teach through his accumulated works after a life-time of fruitful and disciplined effort. He has truly reached a pinnacle of artisitic striving, and should be treated as a national treasure! I have not purchased this book, but have checked it out of the library several times. I wish anyone interested in the lettered/graphic forms of language would study Doyald Young's works, and in this way, come to a true appreciation of how beautiful Word (art) can be. I learned more from this book than practically all the dry, scholarly works combined.

"Clearly Doyald Young's life revolves around his love of letters and his teaching of lettering, logotype design and the fundamentals of typography. Over 40 years of specialisation in the design of typefaces, logotypes and corporate alphabets provides the basis for his publications, which have been adopted by a number of colleges for their logo design classes. Both books go far beyond any suggestion that they are simply learning texts. They are truly definitive works of reference, enhanced by some of the most scholarly and descriptive text I have had the pleasure to read.
"A cover note to "Logotypes & Letterforms" asks "Can you picture the words Coca-Cola without the distinctive script of its logotype? Most of us can't, and that shows how important the logotype is in the visual identification of almost any product or service we use." Doyald Young's fascinating commentary and analysis provides a capsule course in logotype design and development. If you are interested in truly learning how to design and hand draw letterforms, this is just one of his many very useful books on the art. Doyald Young is a master lettering artist / calligrapher -- our U.S. equivalent to the Europe's Hermann Zapf. I own all of Doyald's books. If you interested in graphic design, or know someone who is, all of his books are a must have for the library.

About the Author

PATRICK J. SHEERAN holds a Doctorate in Public Administration, a Masters in International Relations from the University of Southern California. Sheeran is a former Catholic priest, and has taught various graduate courses in public administration, including ethics, at the University of Southern California, George Mason, and Shenandoah Universities. He is the author of Women, Society, the State and Abortion: A Structuralist Analysis (Praeger, 1987).

This is a brilliant treatment of ethics in public administration. Excellent resource

An outstanding text on child temperament. The author puts together a wonderful combination of research and clinical technique in a way that is at once complex yet accessible. This is a subject that as a clinician I've been trying to come to terms with for years, and Dr. Rettew puts it into a context that makes academic and real-world sense.

Parents, teachers and psychologists will find Dr. David Rettew's new book interesting as it discusses temperament types and parenting styles. The book begins with a short history and progresses to an analysis of temperament studies. There is a discussion as to why genes and the environment are responsible for various traits.

Some of the disorders discussed in this book include oppositional defiant disorder, ADHD, OCD, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, psychotic disorders and autism.

I felt this book would help parents understand their children better and help them decide for example when shyness has become a social anxiety disorder.

A major disappointment

This book is a major disappointment. It claims to be "a synthesized update on what has been learned and how temperament affects the development of mental illness." In fact, the book fails to include any of the extensive significant clinical literature, which should be the main substance of such a review.

excellent!

This is a great book for anyone who would like to know more about PCOS. Although small (which is nice), it does an amazing job of explaining information related to PCOS. They use just the right amount of technical language/wording which helps when you go to the doctors or get blood/lab work. I found it a quick read. I will definately be buying this book along with Living with PCOS by Angela Boss, Evelina Weidman Sterling with Richard S. Legro, MD (I borrowed both from the library).

An ok introduction to the components of RapidWeaver

This book is quite good for what it attempts to achieve - an introduction to RapidWeaver, and a small helping of design hints on Search Engine Optimisations.
It deals with the majority of the features in RW, noting those it doesn't cover as being beyond most people's needs. Each feature is covered individually, but there is not much linking between the sections as could have been done if the text had been themed with the construction of a sample web site.

There are a number of typographical errors in the book which are of lesser importance. However the book covers using MobileMe which has been killed by Apple and replaced with iCloud. RW no longer supports this (as of version 5.3 on the 27th June 2012) but the book has not been updated to note this.

Although I would have liked more information on how to go about designing a site using RW, I can't fault the book for not doing something it wasn't written to do.

Overall the book is ok, but I think it needs some work to become a good, or even a great book.

Could do better

A Visual Guide for Learning Rapidweaver

Of course many people think it ridiculous that a piece of software like Rapidweaver - a Mac-only program for creating websites - comes without a manual in the first place, but given that it does, Rapidweaver owners have had to look elsewhere for guidance. The Visual Guide is designed to walk you through the creation of a simple website using Rapidweaver's built-in page types, with special emphasis on creating SEO-friendly sites that are easier for Google to find.

Newcomers to Rapidweaver will find plenty to get their teeth into here and for the most part the guide is as good as its word, keeping things simple and easy to understand. There's the occasional lapse though when it slips into jargon, and having `bigged up' the SEO component of the guide it's disappointing that it's not friendlier - beginners could really do with some specific examples of how to create a relevant description tag or a bit more about how things like the geotag keyword works. The guide could do with a proof read as well to correct some of the grammatical errors and weed out some of the mangled English.

The Visual Guide is good for reminding you about various features you may use irregularly but TBH Paul Bradforth's Raoidweaver 5 Revealed is better written and cheaper (thoughonly available as a PDF I think); and there's also a newish book by Rapidweaver Stacks developer Joe Workman for the same price which is probably worth a look.

Gave me a great intro to Rapidweaver

The Visual Guide for Learning Rapidweaver 5 starts by saying "My objective is to make you love using RapidWeaver as quickly and simply as I can." and by and large accomplishes this goal. I am a total newbie to Rapidweaver, though I've been creating the occasional website with a number of different graphical web editors, and even as far back as when writing html code was the only way to get a web site up (and also when html was simple enough that a mere mortal could do a passable job).

For me, the book was a great introduction to the Rapidweaver. The first half read quickly, providing a nice orientation to the steps necessary to set up a website. The second half served better as a reference for editing, publishing and search engine optimization. In the end, it will serve primarily as a reference, especially for some of the features I might not use on a daily basis.

The only section that didn't seem to be served well by the action-by-action reference guide approach is the Stacks section. Stacks are something you really need to see in action to understand, and it is one section of the book that would be well served by expanding as a mini-tutorial, actually walking through an example of using Stacks to create a page.

My only other minor quibble is that some section heading start at the bottom of the page (particularly when the section begins with a rather large image). It would be a little cleaner if the section headings were kept with the first image or paragraph.

All in all, for anyone new to Rapidweaver, the book is a good investment that will get you started on the right foot and serve as a valuable reference for less commonly used features you'll need to use down the road.
