A well-ordered & informative guide

This is a very nice book from Amazon. It is well planned, very comprehensive & nicely illustrated with many quality photographs. One feature that I especially appreciated is that every photo has a caption directly below it. As I am a beginner to the hobby, at least in regard to what the many varied marbles are called, and to who manufactured what and when, this book really helped me to acquire a good over-view of just those facts. One of the very few ways in which the book might've been improved, is if a few more examples of each company's marbles could've been shown. I do realize that many of these marbles are scarce & that space was limited. Another feature that I liked is that most of the photos were extra-large, likely larger than actual size. The book featured a large typeface as well. This wasn't the first book that I purchased as an introduction to the hobby, but it certainly is the best yet.

Handy book, better than trying to do online research yourself.

I've resold and collected marbles for just over half a year now, so I'm a novice, and while using auction sites, marble identification sites, and collector forums helped me with some of the very basic knowledge, I quickly realized what a hollow online resources are. The marble forums, in particular, where you think you could get advice for the finer details of marble identification, end up being a collection of know-it-alls who don't qualify or source their information at all, and are quickly offended if you question their advice at all, no matter how friendly you are. I've learned to steer clear, or not post my own threads and just try to do very thorough background research in the forums on my own.

In reading this book, I've discovered that, indeed, a lot of these experts online are misinformed or didn't provide enough information, or in the right context. This book is unbiased and gives very clear, concise information on marbles and their approximate prices in relation to each other. I've actually discovered now that my Ebay sales mostly mirror the prices given in this guide, more-so than other guides. This guide also gives you some identification guidance as well, but I really like how it says early on that there is no 'official' grading service for marbles, that some marbles are hard if not impossible to specifically identify to a maker or origin, and most people do use their personal experience and educated judgement to sell marbles. This book is only a guide, just like the others, and there is no definitive rule in marble collecting..

The marble world is fallible and full of holes, especially to resellers who need to know specifics to maximize their profit for picky collectors. This book provided the most guidance for me that I have found as of yet, and I have purchased two other well-known marble guides now as well. You're best bet to unbiased, experienced advice and guidance is right here. I bought my copy used from a public library and it was in very nice, usable condition, so don't be afraid to buy it used if price is a bit of an issue, just make sure you're getting the most recent edition you can, so the marble prices are as accurate as they can be.

And as a final note, don't be afraid to visit antique conventions, where at least a couple marble collectors usually hang out, and sometimes there may even be a marble community in your local area that has regular conventions, flea markets, and swap meets of their own. Hands-on experience is the best way to learn in this field, and when you meet marble enthusiasts face to face, they are much easier going than the online crowd, and can give you much better advice in person than through photos and text.

The Papaya Edition is a revised and abridged edition of "The Givers and The Takers," formerly published by Macmillan in hardback and Fawcett in paperback. The authors received many requests for their book, so are bringing it back to the public. Papaya Press plans to publish Evatt’s book, "Byron Katie’s How to Stop Arguing with Reality" in the Winter of 2002. Look for it on Amazon.com.

One morning, while I was making toast, a loud inner voice yelled at me, "There are two kinds of people in the world—Givers and Takers. And you’re a heavy Giver who is sexually attracted to heavy Takers." I was stunned by the voice’s message. At the time, I was taking a two-year relationship break, after six failed unions and puddles of tears.

Next, the Voice said, "Quick, get a pen and some large index cards…draw a vertical line down the center of thirty cards…make two columns. Now, write ‘Takers’ at the top of the left hand columns and ‘Givers’ at the top of the right columns. Each card is for a behavior. Write one behavior at the top of each card." I wrote apologizing, breaking up, changing people, communication, control, feelings, friendships, giving orders, intimidation, jealousy, love addiction, pleasing, posture, sex appeal, trusting, careers, and so on.

For a month, the Voice and I filled out the cards which defined the quirky behaviors of the Givers and Takers. After that, I never saw people or myself the same. I dropped my heavy Giver ways and became a balanced woman.

In Chapter Two, I describe the thirty Giver-Taker traits that were revealed to me by the Voice. If you study them, you will be able to identify a Giver or a Taker from across the street. Really!

Interesting concept but lacks substance

The classifications of "givers" and "takers" is an interesting concept. The author's 30 questions for identifying giver or taker traits in yourself or others were good. However, once we have that information about ourselves, the follow-up chapters failed to deliver, in my opinion. There is no real substance for helping you to deal with or change your situation. There were also several pages of filler material, in what is already a small book, that had nothing to do with givers or takers. The sections about couples looking like brother and sister and about similarity in names were *interesting,* but what about it? Were they usually successful relationships or failures? Is it something to look *for* or something to *resist* being influenced by? No helpful information at all provided with that. It was just "fun facts." The glossary was, I guess, meant to be humorous; however, it contains pejorative stereotypes that I imagine some readers might not find amusing. This is definitely not a professional book, so if that is what you are looking for, then I suggest you continue your search.

I Didn't Know I Gave So Much!

I used to give too much to everyone: my teenaged kids, my husband, and my co-workers. I was a pushover for the Takers in my life. This book changed me. Reading it was a "Big Aha!" I now say "no" to others without feeling guilty. I walk different, talk different, and dress different, and I've stopped apologizing so much. Until I read THE GIVERS AND THE TAKERS, I was addicted to pleasing others and didn't know it. I actually thought I was assertive. After reading Evatt's and Feld's 30 Giver Traits, I saw my self-denying pattern clearly. Also, the authors say that "Since Givers expend more energy than they receive, they often eat to make up the loss." That was me, too. This book is not frivolous. It contains an original personality theory that is quite sophisticated.

This is a terrific little book that is exactly as the title suggests. The book defines and describes what is meant by a 'giver', or 'a taker'. Who is the user, read chapter 5, and who is being used? Like a soap opera or a made for T.V. family drama, the scenario can take various shapes. However, these authors make it pretty clear who is what, and why. In chapter 5, we get a look at the sneaky ways takers get what they want. "Giver resentment is easier to spot than taker guilt" (p.106). There is nothing more frustrating than a double bind, for there is no resolution that would please one's partner" (107). The more double binds the more deeply embedded the disparity in power and influence. Heavy resistance is a red flag your partner is a 'taker'. "Givers deny themselves" and wonder why they feel emotionally impoverished. The drama is not about being real it's about playing roles. What do you do when you don't play your role? This book will help you figure out who 'YOU' really are. The chapters begin at the beginning and the book ends with its own questionnaire. Once you familiarize yourself with the easy to learn language of "Giving and Taking," you will be armed to set the drama right. This book is for everyone who is in a relationship that feels out of balance. There are so many examples that hitting the nail on the head, so to speak, should not be too difficult.

Great Primer for Digital Image Porcessing

I am currently studying Computer Vision and this book has been of great help. Covers all the important algorithms and method for image processing and then some. Don't be fooled by the title: Undergraduate Topics in Computer Science. This has more than the basics.

Very well written with lots of graphs/images, many in color. Exceptional printing quality in glossy thick paper.

Excellent for self study.

This is volume 2 of the 3 book set. I actually had bought volume 3 first, and then realized that I could well do with this one.
I'm using this collection for self study after being somewhat disgruntled with Gonzalez and Wood's book, which is often very good but sometimes completely glosses over the details. This set of books is pitched at a more elementary level in general than Gonzalez and Woods but in all fairness they do not cover exactly the same topics.For example G&W deal with wavelets (and I didnt find it terribly clear) whereas Burger and Burge just describe it briefly. The Hough transform for line and curve detection gets a good explanation here (better written than in Nixon and Aguado's book) whereas it is not even in the index of G&W.
The algorithm descriptions are very clear, the Java code is very well presented, the pictures are very good, I have not found anything that's not to like about this book yet. I second everything the Greek Geek reviewer wrote about this book.
The only "negative" remark is that the Kindle version is not available for my basic Kindle.

About the Author
Sandra N. Elbaum was an ESL Instructor at Truman College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, for thirty-six years. She has also taught in elementary and high schools, and in Mexico, Puerto Rico, the former Soviet Union, and Slovakia. Sandy is the author of the popular series Grammar in Context, now in its Fifth Edition. Sandy received her B.A. in Spanish and M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois.
